New money is needed for piano lab

New donators will need to step forward if the McNary choir program is to achieve its goal of purchasing a new state-of-the-art piano lab.  The fund-raiser received a big boost when the Keizer Rotary Foundation pledged $6,500 in matching funds to the project.  But more money is needed.

"We're in a position where we have $6,500 and we have to leverage that money, and we are reaching out to the community and asking who wants to help out? Who wants to contribute?," said Jeff Kuhns, the lead Rotarian on the project.

Community participation is crucial.  "The Keizer Rotary Foundation did attach a string in that we need to raise $6,500 of matching funds from new sources," added Kuhns. "That means the Foundation wants us to reach out to the community and identify new people who want to support this project and to make pledges."

Because of the Foundation's mandate, any choir-based fund-raising efforts already dedicated to other needs - such as for purchasing robes - is off limits. "Everything the choir is doing to raise funds, now or in the past, none of that counts. None of that counts. None of that can be applied toward the matching funds. That's separate monies for separate things," said Kuhns.

The goal is for the money to be raised within 45 days. If this deadline is met, it gives choir director Jim Taylor enough time to purchase 12 pianos and set up his lab by fall.

Use of the lab will extend way beyond the choir program.  "It will be a daily part of classes for myself, band and orchestra. Kids will step out of a class on a consistent basis, and our goal is to have them work in the piano lab four times a month. Beginning students as well as advanced students will benefit," said Taylor. The piano lab will also be open afternoons, from 3-7 p.m., provided enough adult volunteers are signed on to ensure coverage.  "All of the stuff we have available, not just the piano lab, will be available to the kids of the Keizer community during these hours," said Taylor.

Taylor added use of the lab will benefit the school as a whole, not just his department, because of the positive impact music has on education in general.  "We want better students, not just for music, but for science and English and math," said Taylor.

The school has enough space available for a new piano lab.  McNary has the largest choir program in the state.

Fellow Rotarian Bob Zielinski joined Kuhns in sponsoring the project.
